Transfers to and from U-Tapao International Airport (UTP)
Getting between U-Tapao and Pattaya, Rayong, and Bangkok
U-Tapao sits near Sattahip on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast, about fifty kilometers south of Pattaya's Walking Street, roughly 140 kilometers south of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, and around 190 kilometers south of Don Mueang. There is currently no direct rail link to the airport - a planned high-speed line connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao is still under construction - so most travelers rely on a private transfer, taxi, or rideshare for the journey. This page is meant to help passengers understand the distances involved and the easiest ways to book a ride before landing.
Where to Meet Your Ride
As a dual-use airport shared with the Royal Thai Navy, U-Tapao's civilian terminal area is more compact than a major commercial hub, and access procedures can shift as construction work on Runway 2 and the new terminal progresses nearby.
If you are coordinating a pickup, sharing your exact flight details and the current terminal entrance with your driver in advance helps avoid confusion, particularly while construction is reshaping parts of the airport grounds.
Distances to Key Destinations
Pattaya is the closest major destination, around 50 kilometers and roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on traffic. Sattahip itself is just a short drive away. Rayong city and the broader Eastern Economic Corridor industrial zones are also within easy reach by road.
Bangkok is considerably further: Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 140 kilometers away, typically a journey of an hour and a half to two hours via Motorway 7, while Don Mueang Airport is roughly 190 kilometers, usually adding another thirty to forty-five minutes depending on Bangkok traffic.
Booking a Transfer in Advance
Given the distances involved and the absence of a direct rail link, booking ground transport ahead of time is the most reliable way to plan a trip to or from U-Tapao, especially for early morning or late arrivals.
The booking widget on this page lets you reserve a private transfer in advance, so a driver is already arranged by the time you land - useful for groups, for connecting onward to Bangkok, or for any trip where a fixed pickup time matters.
Road and Future Rail Options
Motorway 7 provides the main road link between U-Tapao, Pattaya, and Bangkok, and is the route most transfers and taxis use today. Looking ahead, the Don Mueang–Suvarnabhumi–U-Tapao high-speed rail project is intended to eventually connect all three airports directly, which would significantly cut travel time to Bangkok once completed - though as of the current expansion timeline, that link remains under construction with no confirmed opening date.
Until the rail line opens, road transport remains the only practical way to reach U-Tapao from Bangkok or Pattaya.
Tips for a Smooth Pickup
Share the airport's codes, UTP or VTBU, with your driver rather than just "U-Tapao," since the airport is sometimes referred to by older names like U-Taphao in mapping apps and older references.
Because the airport is actively under construction as part of the Eastern Aviation City project, it is worth confirming current terminal access and any temporary road closures with your transfer provider close to your travel date, rather than relying on older information.
